Keith L. March, MD, PhD, FACC

Dr. Keith March is a world-renown innovator in the medical field. Entering college at the age of 12, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine with both a PhD and MD degree by the time that he was 21. He is a pioneer in many areas of medical research, especially as relating to the heart and adult stem cell research.

Dr. March is currently Professor of Medicine, Physiology, and Biomedical Engineering at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Krannert Institute of Cardiology. He is the Director of the Indiana Center for Vascular Biology and Medicine, and holds an endowed chair in Vascular Biology and Medicine. In addition, Dr. March maintains an active practice in clinical cardiology.

Dr. March has published more than 70 manuscripts and edited the first book dedicated to cardiovascular gene transfer. He has served as a scientific advisor to numerous pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies. His research has led from fundamental concepts to clinically useful approaches, resulting in the development of several novel technologies. These innovations have led to the issuance of 40 worldwide (19 US) patents, with others pending. Many of these have been out-licensed from Indiana University and have reached patients or have been under development for patient care applications.

As an example, Dr. March invented and patented a device called a Closer, a suture-mediated closure device that is used to close the arterial hole following a heart catheterization. This device allows a patient to literally "walk off the table" after a catheterization without requiring prolonged bed rest. The company that developed this technology was acquired in 1999 by Abbott Vascular, an affiliate of Abbott Laboratories, for $680 million, and the Closer approach is now used in 500,000 patients worldwide annually.

Dr. March and his wife have six children and live in Carmel, Indiana. He is working with Helixx as part of a partnering initiative with The MasterWorks Foundation, with a goal of optimizing the impact of his lifework.
