Eduardo Najera (born July 11, 1976 in Chihuahua, Mexico) is a basketball player in the NBA, currently playing forward for the Denver Nuggets. He is known for his rebounding and his tenacity on defense on the court, and for his inspirational approach to life off the court. Eduardo is only the second Mexican-born player to join the NBA, and is hugely popular among both Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. He played college basketball at the University of Oklahoma from 1997-2000, becoming a major star there. He helped the team to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances during his college career, and finished in the school's "All-time Top 10" in nine statistical categories. He also helped Mexico achieve fourth place finishes in the 1999 World Games and World University Games. Najera received the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award from the Basketball Hall of Fame, an award given to a player who has demonstrated personal character both on and off the court, and has served as a United Nations Drug Control Program Goodwill Ambassador for Sports Against Drugs. He was recently featured in a commercial sponsored by the Federal Electoral Institute in Mexico to help promote voting for the presidential elections in Mexico. Eduardo's primary philanthropic focus, however, is the Eduardo Najera Foundation for Latino Achievement, which he founded in 2004 to provide college scholarships for outstanding Latino students facing barriers to their educations. The Foundation has helped to launched the Eduardo Najera League that now involves tens of thousands of Latino youth and their families from all across Mexico, training them in court skills as well as skills for life. He also runs an All-Star Camp and produces an NBA All-Star Game in Mexico each year, as well as clinics in communities around the U.S. He is sponsored by Gatorade, Wonder, Qwest, Stanford Financial Group, and a host of others. Eduardo and his wife Jennifer have two children and live in Denver and Mexico. He has retained Helixx to work alongside his sports agent, Roberto Gonzales, in partnership with Stanford Financial Group to advance the work of his Foundation as a part of his overall lifework strategy.
