Bruce O’Neil, Founder & President, United States Basketball Academy Bruce O’Neil brings decades of association with the sport of basketball to the United States Basketball Academy and a constellation of entities he has helped to establish. He is widely recognized as one of basketball’s top technical and operational strategists, and is considered one of the top experts in the world on Chinese sports. O’Neil attended the University of Hawaii on a basketball scholarship and soon after graduation became head assistant coach and chief recruiter for the Rainbows. In 1973, he became one of the youngest Division I head coaches in history at age twenty-seven. That year he was voted the top newcomer coach in Division I basketball. During his tenure at the University of Hawaii, his teams played in the NIT or NCAA tournaments three times. He later served as Head Coach and General Manager for the Hawaii Volcanoes of the CBA, and as a scout for the Detroit Pistons and the Seattle Supersonics. In addition to his background as a participant, O’Neil has established a national and international reputation as a top basketball executive and marketer. In 1983 O’Neil founded Westcom Productions, Inc., a sports video production and marketing company. Under O’Neil’s direction, Westcom became the largest producer of sports instructional video in the USA. Westcom’s partnership with ESPN started ESPN Home Video in 1986 through one of O’Neil’s unique concepts. Westcom produced over 50 titles for the ESPN Home Video Library and over 300 proprietary sports instructional titles for Westcom. Westcom was the first production arm of the NBA when David Stern took over as Commissioner and produced half time features and Fantastic Spots for the League for several years. Other productions inspired by O’Neil include programs carried by ESPN and Prime Sports Network. It was through O’Neil’s contacts in professional and collegiate sports that many successful video alliances were realized, involving companies such as Bank of America, Adidas, Pepsi, MacGregor, Converse, Coca Cola, Chiquita, and Coors. In 1992, O’Neil founded the United States Basketball Academy in Eugene, Oregon. The mission of the USBA was to build a worldwide resource center for the sport. By offering a one-stop shopping center for basketball information and services, coupled with an incredible advisory board (John Wooden, Pete Newell, Wilt Chamberlain, Dale Brown, Jim Harrick, Bob Hill, Arvydas Sabonis, Rick Barry, Shaquille O’Neal and others) and proven sales and marketing techniques, The USBA is now the premier provider of basketball consulting services in the world. As the exclusive partner of FIBA Asia (The Asian Basketball Confederation, comprised of 44 countries), and the top consultant to the Chinese Basketball Association, the Academy annually hosts teams from over 20 countries from around the world. In addition to his duties as President of the USBA, O’Neil has been a member of the Corporate Advisory Board of National Head Start, a member of the Board of Directors of the Warsaw Sports Marketing School (the top-ranked sports marketing program in the world), and has helped to launch Asia Sports Entertainment Group, LLC (“ASEG”). In his role with ASEG, he is facilitating the development of CBA franchise properties and assisting the NBA/China with its development objectives. Bruce has retained Helixx to represent him in advancing his work as an ambassador for the game of basketball, especially in China and other emerging basketball nations, and to better formalize his representation roles for athletes, companies and organizations involved in promoting sports.
